Background

    FORMATIVE YEARS

Two years after the second world war, Janina Siuipys was born of Lithuanian parents (Albertas and Maryte Siuipys) in a 'displaced persons' camp in Hamburg, Germany.

At that time, the USSR had occupied the Baltic States in Eastern Europe.   This meant that Janina's family were unable to return to their homeland.  They were offered refuge by the New Zealand Government in 1949.

The after-effects of the war had given everyone a difficult time, so settling into a new country was a very daunting experience for the young family.

Although Janina's parents were very hard working, they did not have many of the provisions that the current immigrants and refugees enjoy under the Government today.   Each member in the Siuipys family were naturalised as New Zealand citizens in 1953.

As a young child, Janina learned to speak English at school.  During this time, she translated the English and Lithuanian languages for her parents, assisting and teaching them elementary reading and writing skills.

TEENAGE YEARS - Hazelwood Travel Hotel

During her secondary school years in the 1960's, Janina's spare-time activities were mainly dedicated to the hospitality industry, helping her parents in managing the Hazelwood Travel Hotel at 123 Cargill Street, Dunedin.   This was a family owned private hotel with catering facilities for banquets and weddings.

Of worthy note in 1960, Janina designed a black and white advertising brochure to assist the initial development and promotion of the family business.  The brochure remained in vogue for several years.  Janina's mother (Maryte) continued with banquet catering at the Hazelwood Travel Hotel for some 24 years.

    WORKING YEARS

Over 40 years, Janina has taken on a diverse range of roles and responsibilities.  Some of this time was to help support her husband while he studied for the full-time Diploma in Industrial Design in the 1970's and for the Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety Management in the 1980's.

This meant gaining a diversity of skills and experience in different working situations with both small and large organisations, government departments, private and commercial industries.   This wide background has been an excellent platform to shine out with administrative and management skills.

Director of Teemay Consultants

In 1986, Janina became the Administrative Director of Teemay Consultants - forming an occupational health and safety partnership with Mark Avery (her husband, the Managing Director of Teemay Consultants, see www.teemay.co.nz).

As a team member, Janina assisted in preparation of occupational health and safety training course material which was presented to a wide range of selected client groups, throughout New Zealand.

During the early 1990's, Teemay workshops were attended by many managers and their employees from all over New Zealand.   This was the era of introducing the current Health and Safety in Employment Act 1992 which had replaced the former Factories and Commercial Premises Act 1981 and its associated enactments.    During this period, Janina became qualified as a health and safety consultant.

Janina marketed "Health and Safety Laws at Work:  Key Issues"  [ISBN 0-473-01932-9] that was written by Mark Avery and published by Teemay Consultants.   The book focussed n meeting the needs of the industrial and manufacturing sectors to ensure self-sufficiency in understanding their role in managing health and safety.

Early in 1995, the Approved Code of Practice for the use of Visual Display Units was about to be released.  Teemay seminars were conducted in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch.  These venues provided the opportunity to discuss the range of preventative strategies that were available.   The Approved Code of Practice was later released to the public in November 1995.

Janina has retained her directorship in Teemay Consultants.

In 2001 Janina formed  A PLUS Health and Safety Advisory Services with its own identity, independence and expertise.   In 2005, Janina registered A PLUS Health and Safety Limited having 19 years as a health and safety consultant, director and part-owner of Teemay Consultants.
